When a liquid flows through an elbow, the centrifugal forces cause a pressure difference between the outer and inner sides of the elbow.
The fluid that flows near the inside radius of the elbow will have a slightly lower pressure than the fluid that flows on the outer radius of the elbow.
This difference in pressure is used to calculate the flow velocity.
The pressure difference generated by an elbow flowmeter is much smaller than that by other pressure differential flowmeters, a manometer or ultralow differential pressure sensor must be used to sense it.
An elbow flowmeter has less obstruction to the flow.
The pressure taps will be located in the elbow's midpoint (45 deg. point) for piezometer taps.
